This is out first Halloween in our apartment, so we’ve no idea if we’ll get any trick-or-treaters… but if we do, Cake & I are ready for them!

one of those days…

I’ve been having somewhat of a rough day. It began with our dog puking in front of his crate. Next, I dropped a madeleine pan on my foot, most likely breaking a toe in the process. I rarely bruise, but my toe blossomed in bruises immediately. Then I managed to knock a glass of lemon water over onto my mobile and my iPod. The mobile is fine, the iPod is most likely fine but sitting in a bag of rice, just to be on the safe side.

I’ve thus concluded that it’s probably not a good idea to leave the house today. I’m having leftovers in a microwave safe bowl, as I’m not sure I trust myself to use the stove at this point. My current plan is to crawl back into bed with my sketchbook and a bag of ice for my foot, then watch netflix for the rest of the day/evening. I’m debating whether to attempt making tea to go with my madeleines. Not sure it’s worth the risk… then again, I suppose I could microwave the water as well.

Update: Managed to put the kettle on and make tea without either bodily harm or property damage. Still, opted to have my tea in the kitchen rather than my workspace, just in case.

OKAY GUYS, HUGE NEWS! My upcoming graphic novel (based on a YA novel by Prudence Shen) NOTHING CAN POSSIBLY GO WRONG, will be serialized online from now until its publication in May 2013!
Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong is a graphic novel about two guys, Nate and Charlie, one’s a nerd, one’s a jock, but they still manage to have this weird, kind of combative friendship. Until they both get tangled up in a highly competitive school election that spirals out of control and then … well, you’ll have to read it to see. ;) This book contains ninja cheerleaders, over the top comedy and SO MANY BATTLE ROBOTS. Seriously, I was reading through it the other day and I had to draw like 50 pages of robots fighting and it is insane.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE COMIC! I would really, really appreciate it! The comic is going online with the permission of my publisher, First Second, and I’m very grateful to them for letting me share it with the internet. So, internet, please tell everyone you know of its existance!
Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong will be updating with a page every weekday, and Prudence and I will be blogging along with the updates, giving readers insight into our creative processes and other nonsense.
Yay!!!!

This is what happens when I watch entire seasons of Adventure Time whilst researching Marie Antoinette.

I was happiest at this point, the second to last stage. I’d always intended to use the pen outline though, and too much of the original sketch is apparent here. I’d have used a far lighter hand on the non-photo pencil otherwise…

Sketch and color sketch for a WIP titled La Dauphine, showing the handover of Marie Antoinette at the pavillon de remise. Not sure I like the end result, so I’m probably going to start over from scratch. Definitely doing away with the pen in the final as well.

I usually write down everything I eat, then sketch it all out, but I’ve decided to cut out the notes part for now. Also, I’m running low on Staedtler pencils, so I tried a Prismacolor non-photo, but the lead must be old… it kept breaking every time I tried to draw. The lead is much softer than the Staedtlers, all smudgy, so I don’t think I’ll try Prismacolor again. :(

Sketching a backlog of food journal entries… my pen ran out of ink mid-sketch, so I had to swap over to another.
